IEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I'm trying to figure out what the difference is between an "Electronics Engineer" and an "Electrical Engineer". The reason? I referenced the IEEE in my thesis proposal, and found out it stood for the "Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers".

Holy redundancy Batman!

Not that there aren't stupid differences in the Earth Sciences either. We have people who are "Hydrographers" and people who are "Hydrologists", and they would likely fight to the death to defend the differences between them...yet both fields of research can be summarized as "Water flows downhill".

Working music

I've found that there are two types of music which are great for getting work done. The stuff I usually listen to isn't really cutting it, it's too distracting. The first thing I've found that I like to work to is the Saxophone Jazz station on AccuRadio. Being a former Saxomophonist, it's great to listen to. It's upbeat but ambient at the same time, perfect for working.

The second group may seem a little nerdy for some people, but it works for me. I've downloaded MIDIs of all the songs from Final Fantasy IV, VI, and VII, Secret Of Mana, and Chrono Trigger. It provides me with good ambient music that's great for working. Not to mention the nostalgia factor. Especially Chrono Trigger...how can you not get pumped up listening to Frog's theme?

For my 100th post...

...I bring you the funniest use of Google Earth yet.

Funny Headline from CNN.com

"Cheney takes blame for hunting accident"

I'm shocked...because logic dictates that if Cheney shot the guy, then it must have been someone else's fault. Arrgh.

I hate the media.

Betzkygate...or whatever

This whole Tocchet/NJ Police betting thing is getting really annoying. It's been a long time since a lack of news has caused this much news. It's being talked about all over Canadian media, both sports and non-sports. It's getting entire sports radio shows devoted to it and you just can't seem to avoid it. If you're not sure what all the fuss is about, here's what we know so far.

Rich Tocchet, assitant coach to Wayne Gretzky in Phoenix, allegedly has been funding a gambling ring in New Jersey since October 2005. The ring was being assisted by a NJ State Trooper. Janet Jones (Gretzky's wife) was allegedly one of about a dozen people who are known to have placed bets. There's a report from an unnamed source that Wayne allegedly is heard on a phone conversation with Tocchet trying to figure out how to keep his wife from getting caught up in all the mess.

That's it. Hours of reporting, speculation, and some of the stupidest questions you will ever hear are based on one paragraph of writing. These media idiots are making everyone's life on the Canadian olympic hockey team a nightmare, especially the Gretzky family, and for what? The guy's got a squeaky clean history, he's one of Canada's most recognized figures, and we're trying to find ways to tarnish him. Why? I don't get it.

Cool Touchscreen Technology

Found this on SlashDot, it's a touch screen that recognizes multiple inputs. It's got loads of potential applications, and I giggled like a school girl when I saw the part with him navigating the maps.

Technical Mumbo-Jumbo

I'm working on my thesis proposal, and I just wrote one of the most convoluted paragraphs I've ever come up with:

The most commonly accepted, cross-domain definition of ontology seems to be “a specification of a conceptualization”. Many different definitions of the term ontology exist, and they are generally tailored to the domain in which the term is being used. This multiplicity in definitions is the exact problem that ontologies are being used to solve in many cross-domain applications. In fact, one could argue that the above definition of ontology is itself an ontology for the ontology field. It is a specification (in this case, a definition) of a conceptualization (in this case, the concept of ontology).
Basically, I just defined a term in terms of its own definition, and used it as an example of the definition as the same time. I rule!

Neverending White Lights

The guy behind Neverending White Lights (Daniel Victor) is playing at the Chubby Pickle in Windsor on March 10th. The music on that album is unbelievable...anyone from Windsor owes it to themselves to check this out. I'm looking forward to seeing what he's like live.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, listen for "The Grace" on the radio or watch for the video on Much Music.

He's also making stops in Ottawa, London, Waterloo, and Toronto.

Liberal Leadership

With Paul Martin stepping down and a bunch of high-profile liberals choosing not to run for the liberal leadership, the new front runners are supposedly Belinda Stronach, Michael Ignatieff, and Scott Brison. If this is the case, it should be interesting to see who wins. Ignatieff supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq (for the sake of freeing the Iraqi people, not for the purpose of trying to find weapons). Brison was, if I'm not mistaken, the first (and only?) openly gay MP, and Stronach (with some help from Chuck Cadman) kept the liberal minority afloat by crossing the floor.

It should make for an interesting race to say the least.
