I'm getting sick of this

Diversity lacking on White Sox

The gist of the article is that there are no black players on the Houston Astros (one of the teams in the World Series right now - why it says White Sox in the title of the article, I don't know).

Hall of famer Joe Morgan was quoted as saying "Of course I noticed it. How could you not?" Well, Joe, I've watched a good chunk of all three games so far, and I didn't notice it. Why? Because I wasn't looking for it.

Later in the article, it talks about how only 9% of players this season were black.

But let's crunch the numbers. The average major league roster probably has about 25 guys on it at any given time, and there are 30 teams, that's 750 players. At 9%, that's about 67 black players, or an average of just over 2 per team. At an average of 2 per team, there's obviously going to be some teams with no black players, while other will have 4 or 5, it's simple statistics.

The real problem, if you want more black players, is to get more black children interested in the game at an early age. The article addresses this, noting that most black athletes are choosing other sports (baskeball and football).

If you want to get people interested in baseball, maybe you shouldn't take 3 and a half hours to play a game.

God Tower

I apologize in advance for all the time you'll likely waste on this one. Don't start it if you've got work to do :}

God Tower

It's basically a series of riddles/puzzles, whose solution results in a password. You enter the password, you get to the next puzzle. There's apparantly 99 puzzles. I just started, I'm on the 4th one, but I think I need to get work done now.

MY SHOULDER WON'T CRACK!

Just thought I'd share...it's been like a day and it's driving me crazy.

One thing's for sure, it'll be loud when it happens.

Podcasts

These things are popping up everywhere, and I don't quite grasp the name. I know it comes from the iPod terminology, but a "Podcast" is no different than any other mp3 you would rip from a CD or download. Why should it be inherently related to an iPod when there is no relation?

Okay, my rant's over.

Neverending White Lights

I just found out about an album that a guy from Windsor (Daniel Victor) put together. It's got tracks from a bunch of different artists, including the lead singers from 311, Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven, Switchfoot, and Alexisonfire.

The only track I've heard is "Liar" by Raine Maida of OLP, and it's brilliant. I've heard nothing bad about this album, though it's definately not a pick-me-up album. I'll probably be picking it up in the next few days.

Find out more here.

We're all doomed

So I'm marking some tests, and I've begun to realize why we're in such sad shape in this world. We have people in University (where the future leaders of society are supposed to come from) who:
  • Leave the answer to true/false questions blank
  • When given the choice of A, B, C, D, or E, choose F, cross it out, then choose S

Meant to post this a few days ago but forgot.

Idiotic

I usually don't pay attention to celebrities...if they don't care about me, why should I care about them?...but I had to post this.

Nicholas Cage has named his new kid Kal-El, which was Superman's "real name". I can't believe this is serious. Was he sitting there thinking, "how can make sure that my son will get beat up at school every day of his life until he's 18"?

You know, if we all start ignoring celebrities, they might just go away. Then we'd all be better off.

Chris Cornell, Canadian Rock

I'm listening to the new Audioslave album right now (it was part of my shopping spree in Toronto, but I didn't get to it before the new OLP album came out), and I have to say, Chris Cornell might be the best rock singer ever. There is no note he can't hit. He can sing pure rock or power ballads. Just spectacular.

Another music note, what is it about Canadian rock that makes it stand out? Bands like 54-40, The Hip, The Odds, The Trews, etc. all have a certain sound to them that makes it "Canadian" rock. I can't put my finger on it, but it's there. Canadian rock tends to have a cleaner, more stripped down sound, but I don't think that's all there is to it. Am I the only one that thinks like this? When you hear a band like The Trews or Sloan, you just know that it's Canadian music, even if you don't know the band.
